Chapter Nine

“DUSTY, HONEY what’s wrong?” His mom rushed to him as he practically fell through the door into the living room. No way to hide. He knew his tearstained face said more than he could excuse.

“Nothing, Mom. I just need to lie down.”

“Dammit, Dustin. I told you not to go.” She took a deep breath. She tried so hard not to blame him for going against her wishes. She tried to treat him like an adult. “So you’re just tired? You don’t have flashes?”

“Yes, ma’am.” He wanted to scream and cry and rail against the shimmering halos that circled his field of vision and made it hard to walk. “I’m going to take a nap, okay? Then I’d love something to eat. Something good.” He flashed her the warmest, happiest, most believable smile he could muster.

She fell for it. “Okay, honey. How about some nice salmon and mashed potatoes with lots of butter?”

“That sounds perfect.” He tried to walk a straight line to his room. When he got inside, he carefully closed the door, then struggled to the bed and fell on it. Clutching his belly—or maybe his heart—he curled in a ball. Salmon? He knew how much she had to pay for it to give him the high-fat fish, but God, he didn’t care if he never ate again.

Breathe. Deeply. Breathe.

The air filled his belly, then his chest, and then expanded all the way behind his collarbone. Peace. Joy. Peace. Joy. He didn’t want me. He realized what a mistake he made and ran. Peace. Please, peace.

He breathed and focused on the breath. Again and again. Stop. Why on earth would he want me? All shall be well. It’s as it should be. All shall be well.

The welcome gray fog of sleep crept across his brain.
